Activities
Montana Council’s Grizzly Base Camp is situated between Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Hungry Horse Reservoir and many other attractions and recreational opportunities.
Note: Montana is bear country. While the camp has never had an injury incident related to bears, this is in no small part due to conscientious bear-aware food handling practices. Please ask for advice.
Available In Camp
- Fishing – Grizzly Base’s MacGilvray Lake is stocked with rainbow trout. License information for Montana waters. Fishing at Grizzly Base is available to Scouts and Scout volunteers on a catch and release basis, though we do allow Scouts to keep a fish for a meal.
Note: Grizzly Base is NOT public land. - Canoeing – Grizzly Base has several canoes in varying sizes. With the proper supervision, Scouts can hone their skills on our 14 acre lake before heading out for more challenging water adventure. Fishing from canoes is allowed, of course. Paddles and PFDs are provided. Grizzly Base does not provide lifeguards at this time.
- Hiking – In-camp hiking to get your legs warmed up after a long air, car or train trip is available anytime. We have 132 acres of mixed flat and hilly treed terrain.
- Pellet Range – Our new indoor pellet range (opening summer 2011) features high-accuracy air-powered (CO2) pellet rifles and “police range” style target retrieval, so your boys can shoot in a safe environment year-round. Advance notice is required so that we can have a rangemaster and supplies present.
- Archery – Our archery range is limited (primarily intended for Cub Scout use), but with advance notice we can have materials and a range master available for your unit.
- Orienteering course (suitable for First Class orienteering course) – This course includes ground-corrected GPS coordinates and covers changing terrain over varying terrain including several pitches where you cannot see the destination from the starting point, as well as a pitch across water. If your boys can run this course successfully, you can be confident they can handle themselves with a compass and pacing stick or similar.
