How You Can Help: Service Projects

Interested in completing a work project at Grizzly Base? Here are a few ideas.

TOP PRIORITY

Trim work in the pellet range – Some simple trim work on the windows between the shooters area and the target area.

Freezer dismantling, stage 3: The walk-in cooler needs to be dismantled. It is possible that we can use it as a dry storage room outside under a shelter next to the kitchen, but it can’t stay in the warehouse where it is. Unlike the freezer attached to the front of it that is now gone, dismantling is necessary, rather than taking a Sawzall to it.

Electrical in the pellet range: Install electric heating appliances in the pellet range.

New Campsites graded: We have at least 1 and maybe 2 excavators coming out in May. Some chips can be spread on these campsite pads once they are prepared. The chips are on premises, on the south end of camp on the new 20 acre parcel we acquired in 2010.

Septic pump: If anyone has connections in this biz, we need to have the tank pumped. It has been about 5 yrs since we had it done.

Plumbing repairs: A few small projects here and there can always use the touch of an experienced plumber. The good news is that all the work is indoors. Thank you to those brave plumbers who fixed up the kitchen after our hard winter.

OTHER PROJECTS

Clean out warehouse: We intend to return this to functional area and not storage. No more “donations” will be accepted for this area unless they have a pre-determined use. We need 3 pre-hung wooden doors, 3 combination locks and 3 hasps to secure the 3 storage areas for OA stuff, cub camp stuff and pricey tools.

Fence repair along the new road: Maybe 100-200 feet of fence repair. Mostly reinstalling posts that are there and still have all the wires attached. Post hole diggers or a rental auger (check with Midway Rental, they will provide at discounted price if they have one available).

Perimeter fence repair: Dismantle the old wood perimeter fence on the SW side of camp.  Might be worthwhile to talk to Mild Fence about the best equipment to remove the posts.

Pipe insulation: Need to measure, buy and install pipe insulation for the pipes under the kitchen. There is a sizable crawl space so this wont be difficult.

Interim gates: We need some interim gates built at the road intersections on the loop near the warehouse/dining hall. Simple draw gates to reinforce that we don’t want regular traffic below the warehouse or on the steep road below the first aid hut.

Chapel grading and cleanup: We have some prep work that needs to be done on the chapel to prepare it for future rehabilitation.

Kybos: Kybos can be hosed/swept out and checked re: safety and usability. Dangerous ones should be nailed shut for now. Please notify the camp commitee if a kybo is dangerous and should be dismantled or repaired.

COMPLETED PROJECTS:

First aid hut re-roofing: COMPLETE! The first aid hut shingles need to be stripped off and replaced with felt paper and metal. The metal is already in camp. Will need felt paper, screws, perhaps some wood tools if plywood is necessary to repair a hole. Will need cordless drills to install the metal. pry bars and the like will be needed to strip off the old shingles, which can be piled in a clearing below the first aid hut and burned – or saved for kindling.
Thanks Troop 41 for the labor and Eagle Scout Jim Atkinson for roofing materials.

Freezer dismantling, stage 2: COMPLETE! The front third of the freezer has been dismantled and the compressor has been removed. The other 2/3rds need to be dismantled and removed. A sawzall (or 2), plus large screwdrivers, pry bars and such will be needed. The scrap from the dismantled freezer can be hauled to the green boxes near the entrance to Many Lakes in Creston.

Electrical in the pellet range:  COMPLETE! Install lights in the pellet range. Lights are installed, thanks to Jeff Baiar of Troop 1941.

Drywall in the pellet range: COMPLETE! Most of the drywall inside the range is up and mudded. The last bit needs to be mudded and the remaining areas sanded and remudded.

Painting in the pellet range: COMPLETE – The interior needs to be painted before we can install electrical gear and the rifle gear. The walls must be primed and then painted.

Install Plywood backwall in the pellet range: COMPLETE – Plywood backwall protection can be installed. The plywood is already there.
